Why do you run?
To feel the breeze flow by as my forward motion splits the air.
To feel the power in my legs as I battle my sedentary nature and the effects of time.
For the freedom of moving unencumbered by mechanical contrivances.
Because of the hope to see another 10-point buck, or a new wildflower along the route.
For the quietness that is entered into over the pounding of the feet.
To witness the ever-changing colors and shapes of sunrise over the distant mountains seen when I'm down in the valley farmland.
For the scent of new-cut alfalfa, and the sound of my dog happily splashing next to me in the canal.
The excitement of sharing the trail with a 300-pound bear and (thank God) him being the one to run away
Wild roses.
Companionship.
Solitude-and the rarity of free-flowing, uninterrupted thought and prayer
Solutions found to problems.
Health.
The training effect-ability to win.
Reaching the top of a dirt trail up coastal hills and having the mist roll away and seeing the coastline from Morro Bay to Cayucos appear all of a sudden as I crest the highest hill.
Because, thanks to God, I can.
