Why I Run - Why I Run - Gary J. Brown

I run for many simple reasons.

I run for my father who passed away at 57 of a heart attack when I was 26. I got my love for all sports from him. My father was my biggest fan and he was always around when I played sports be it soccer at 11 years old or softball at 25 years old. But he left this world too soon and I find it important to stay fit because I want to be around in my sons’ lives for a very long time. My father would want it that way. To this day, whenever I run a race I imagine him there watching me.

I run for my kids. I use running as a metaphor for life with them. I explain to them (my 4 year old understands as much as he can) that the harder I work at running the better I do in races. There are no shortcuts in running as there are none in life. Work hard in both and you will accomplish your goals. If I am to talk the talk I need to walk the walk (or run the run if you prefer).

Above all, I run for me.

I run because all my concerns, worries and problems disappear for the time that I am running. When they return after my runs I feel better prepared to handle them. Running brings me serenity.

I run because I love competing with myself. I enjoy pushing myself to whatever limit I have that day.

I run because it permits me to compete adequately in other sports. I am a very average hockey player but fitness is the great equalizer in old-timer hockey. I can compete against more talented players because I have more stamina. Where I have a second and third wind they have none.

I run because the majority of the population doesn’t. I’m proud that my favourite sport goes against the grain. It would be so simple to take up golf but I already live a conventional life. Running allows me to be a different.

Tomorrow I may have different reasons as to why I run. But today, that is why I run.
